WHAT IS NUMEROLOGY?

Numerology is the science of numbers.

What is Numerology; with numerologist Hans Decoz

Numerology is the Study of Numbers and How They Affect Us.

Decoding The Patterns

Numerology is based on the idea that the entire universe is a system, one that mathematically breaks down into basic elements: numbers. It reveals a number’s inner nature and vibration, and how they correspond to your personal characteristics.

You probably haven’t thought of numbers as having a personality, but as you get to know them you’ll realize most of us have preferences for one number over another. You make these choices because you feel an intuitive attraction to the nature or personality of the number.

Numerology is a language that allows you to expand the horizon of your spiritual awareness.

It is based on the notion that everything is connected, and that everything exists in perfect synchronicity with everything else. Without that vision, metaphysical sciences can't exist.

The Practical side of numerology

Numerology is used as a method of understanding your own deeper nature: your talents and your life goals; your hidden characteristics; your opportunities and challenges.

It offers insight into the opportunities that will come to you during the years ahead. It describes the cycles you experience during the course of your life, and offers guidance in career, romance, and prosperity. Precisely speaking, it helps in providing meaningful advise in all types of situations.

The Philosophy Behind Numerology

The fundamental premise of numerology is that life, and the universe as a whole is an orderly system, and that numbers reflect that orderliness

Numbers are by definition orderly

When we confront the question of numerology we are facing the same dilemma that we all face with the larger questions of life: Is there meaning and order to life, or is it purely a random and chaotic universe?

There are three possible answers to this question: the universe is ruled by randomness and chaos; the universe is infinitely orderly; or both randomness and orderliness exist.

Randomness is a state in which there is no order or larger meaning. Such a state of affairs would mean that the universe is ruled by chance events, and there are no orderly laws governing the universe.

In fact, we know this premise to be untrue, since the natural sciences, such as physics, mathematics; biology, chemistry, and astronomy are all based on the orderliness, even predictability, of natural law.

Moreover, if the universe were ruled by unpredictable events, there would be no sustainable structure to it. On the contrary, the universe not only maintains form and structure, it also changes in precise and orderly ways.

We are continually witnesses to this process of change: Day turns into night, and night turns into day; winter is followed by spring, and summer is followed by fall; and apples grow on apple trees, and figs grow on fig trees, and they never, ever, get confused.

Orderliness can be seen in every aspect of existence, from the subatomic world to the world of stars and galaxies. Therefore, we can cancel the first possibility to our original question: There is, at the very least, some orderliness.

-Ω-

But is it all orderly?

When we look at the very basics of life—the world of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA), the molecular world, and the developing child—we see an awesome sequence unfolding.

DNA is of such profound orderliness that it has been the template for producing literally billions upon billions of human beings with the same universal characteristics, two eyes, ten fingers, ten toes, et cetera. That no two sets of eyes are alike only shows the remarkable creativity and energy that are contained within this DNA molecule.

The gestation and birth of a child are also examples of remarkable orderliness: It still takes egg and sperm to produce an ovum, and nine months for a child to fully develop and to be born.

-Ω-

The growth pattern of humans has remained essentially the same too: We are born very young, and grow through adolescence, puberty, adulthood, maturity, and old age, at which point we die. The arc of life is consistent and stable. This has been happening for about 2 million years, the length of time humans have inhabited the planet.

If we look up at the stars and see the planets, we see a further example of great orderliness. In creation, there is no randomness, a fact that is the basis for all physical sciences.

-Ω-

Yet, all of us experience events that we perceive as arbitrary or random.

How can we reconcile the awareness that beneath our feet and above our heads—indeed, our very bodies—are the products of profound orderliness, while our lives seem permeated by random events of which we can make no sense?

We seem forced to say that, at first glance, both order and randomness exist simultaneously. But wait—doesn’t our perception of how much order there is in the universe constantly grow as we learn more?

For example, only three decades ago, heart disease and cancer were regarded by most of us as random and terrible events in life. Today we believe that these illnesses are of the result of our daily behavior and eating pattern. Both illnesses have very logical etiologies. Consequently, they are the products of order. The illnesses have not changed; only our understanding of them has.

-Ω-

Many examples of so-called “natural disasters,” such as famine, drought, and mud-slides, are often perceived as random events. It is only later that the cause is usually discovered to be mankind’s ignorance. Specifically, we have not had (and still don’t have) a perspective large enough to understand all the variables that come into play when we begin to tamper with the underlying orderliness.

The point here is that our perception of what is random keeps changing as we learn more. Meanwhile, our appreciation of an underlying order was always implicit in these events that were previously regarded as random; we simply didn’t see the order.

-Ω-

Our growing understanding of order also changes the way we experience space and time. We all have had experiences that we cannot explain that fall in to the category of synchronicity or extrasensory perception. These experiences violate our normal perception of space and time. We think of these things as out-of-the-ordinary, but they are really glimpses of the underlying order that our rational minds cannot comprehend, and that we perhaps were not designed to understand.

Numerology & Quantum Physics

As quantum physicist F. Capra points out in his book The Tao of Physics, scientists have now discovered a universal unity among all phenomena. As Capra said, the universe is characterized by the "fundamental interdependence" between all phenomena.

And quantum physicist Niels Bohr emphasized that the main consequence of these theories is that we cannot separate any part of the material universe from the rest without making an error. The new vision of reality is a spiritual vision in its very essence.

Progress for the human spirit, as I've come to see it, is an elevation of consciousness to where the individual becomes fully aware of being an integral part of the cosmos as a whole, and of its maker.

This mode of consciousness is much, much broader than anything that could possibly develop from a rational thought process. Contrary to the knowledge of the mind, this understanding is rooted in seeing, recognizing, and realizing at a much deeper level, It typically occurs in meditative experiences, but it can also occur in many other settings.

-Ω-

Science is trying to reach that kind of understanding.

As Capra indicated, quantum mechanics is demonstrating that the fundamental reality of the universe-while not immediately apparent to our rational minds-is a vast unity in which all things are related.

In ancient times, this understanding formed the basis for all the natural and spiritual sciences. In fact, natural Science was merely the tool that was used to discover the underlying orderliness of the universe, otherwise Known as God, Out of this consciousness came such spiritual sciences as numerology.

-Ω-

Numerology is based upon this underlying unity.

A unity that manifests itself in a very intimate way in all of our lives. Our names and dates of birth, for example, are connected with our deepest inner being in a way that the rational mind cannot immediately understand. The intuitive mind, however, is capable of perceiving these relationships, and of interpreting them to help us better understand our lives.

The act of giving something a name is not a superficial or intellectual effort, but a reflection of our deep experience of the essence of the thing we are naming. It comes out of our connection, or our intuitive feeling of that thing.

For example, the word storm, with its special combination of vowels and consonants, gives us a feeling of the movement and power of an invisible force. Storm. Say it and you will feel it.

Another example is the word power, which names something, but at the same time gives the experience of the thing we are naming: Power! The biting movement of the jaw makes us feel it.

The word love embraces you gently, It gives you the experience of its meaning.

Every word, in every language, perfectly reflects the feeling and spirit of the thing that is named by the people who use that language.

Some will argue that the words used to name things were originally chosen arbitrarily, and then were integrated into our inner feelings. However, our understanding of sound comes from an archetypal and unconscious part of our being. It is intimately connected with our appreciation of music; no matter whether you are tone deaf or have perfect pitch, all of us have an inborn capacity to discern music from chaotic noise, Music is harmony. And music is inside of us.

Nature, too, is filled with events that have trained us to associate certain qualities with sounds: The clap of thunder, the woosh of a river, or the whir of a bird in flight.

From our innate understanding of music and harmony comes the act of naming thing according to our perception of their inner natures. This intuitive act is the source of language. All languages emerge from, and represent the nature of the people who use them.

-Ω-

All of this points to a single and incredibly significant fact: sound and time are both rooted in harmony and universal order.

This is the source of numerology. The numerologist maintains that each of us carries the perfect name that reflects our inner nature or being. That name is collection of sounds, a melody, that in a very deep and perfect way is you.

The Three Pillars of Numerology

Numerology's approach should be viewing you from three angles: you, your path, and your future

"Know thyself" is as relevant a statement today as it was when Plato used it 2,500 years ago

When I first started working with numerology, almost 40 years ago, I found the biggest challenge in creating truly personal readings was discovering why two people with similar numbers could end up being so different.

The answer is that it is essential to note where each number appears in a chart –  not just consider the number’s attributes.

You have 5 key core numbers (Life Path, Expression, Soul Urge, Personality, and Birthday number), plus a wide range of numbers that play lesser but important roles. Without scrutiny, this jumble of numbers creates something akin to numerology soup - a cluster of numbers and personality traits that could apply to just about anyone. But, when you consider the location of each number, you obtain far more personalized information.

If you and a friend have a 5 among your core numbers, you might suppose you have something in common. But if your 5 appears in a different location than your friend’s (a 5 Heart's Desire versus a 5 Personality or 5 Expression for instance) the effect the 5 has will be dramatically different.

A different approach to numerology and personality profiles

Two becomes three

Over time I noticed another issue.

Traditionally, numerologists have been mindful of two different sides of your personal Numerology chart: your Personality Profile and your Future Forecast. I have not been comfortable with that for several years, as I became more and more convinced that to have a clear understanding of your makeup and the path you are on, it would be more insightful to look at your chart from three different angles, because that's essentially how you exist: you, your path, and your future.

Think of these aspects as the three pillars of your life, and learn which numbers represent each area and how they relate to one another.

-Ω-

The First Pillar: You

First, there is you, with your unique mixture of talents, personality traits, idiosyncrasies, dreams, hopes, likes and dislikes. These characteristics are reflected in your name. Your full name at birth is the blueprint of who you are. Think of it as your numerological DNA.

The logic behind this is easy to see; when you introduce yourself, you say "I am so-and-so," thereby stating who you are (and revealing much more than you might be aware of). The same applies even when you use a shorter version of your name or a nickname, slightly adjusted to reveal a somewhat different view of you.

Any time your chart talks about the core numbers that are derived from your name, the numbers missing in your name, or those that are present in abundance, you should understand it as speaking to who you are. Not your future, not the direction of your life, just you, the individual.

-Ω-

The Second Pillar: Your Path

Secondly, look at your path - the direction your life wishes to move -  the momentum of your life. This is not your future forecast, nor is it your "destiny," it is truly a path. Since there is no point of arrival where you could say, "I have fulfilled my destiny and therefore my life is complete," the words destiny and goal do not apply.

In Numerology, it is quite aptly named your Life Path. This is the most important number in your chart because in a way, you could call it your purpose.

The Life Path number is derived from your date of birth. It signifies the window in time through which you came to be in human form, to live a number of years, until you come to another window where you step through, leaving your human form to return to dust.

What I hope to convey is that Numerology, if interpreted properly, views your Life Path as indicative of the direction, growth, and advancement you are meant to travel. Your Life Path is a cycle; its attributes are dynamic, active, and evolving.

-Ω-

The Third Pillar: Your Future

Finally, we have the third pillar: your Future Forecast.

Here too, the numbers are based on your date of birth, because they were set in motion by your birth. The moment you stepped onto your path, several cycles kicked in that began to influence you, as they will continue to throughout your life. This is another beautiful piece of logic behind the science of Numerology.

The gears (cycles) set in motion by your birth work together, and if you look closely – as Numerology does – you begin to recognize their synchronicity.

Furthermore, when you look at the influence of the numbers that appear throughout these cycles, you get an idea, to some extent, of how future events might unfold.

Three sides of a single, amazing story: You, Your Path, and Your Future.

Numerology and Symbolism

The nine cardinal numbers not only symbolize nine specific archetypes, but also nine stages of development that all of us pass through in order to complete our growth and maturity.

In one of the nicer examples of symbolic psychology, the shape of the number 9 itself contains a circle on a lead, representing the completion of a cycle, a turning back to the beginning, which is also manifested in the fact that whenever any number is added to the number 9, it comes back to itself.

For example, if you add 9 plus 5, you get 14, which, if added together (the 1 and the 4 of 14), makes 5 again. An 8 plus 9 is 17, which, if 1 and 7 are added together, gives us 8 again.

Three different ways of looking at the 9-the shape of the symbol, the mathematical strangeness, and what it represents in numerology-reveal closely related characteristics.

-Ω-

The symbols of numbers reflect their nature.

The pillar shape of the number 1 reflects the independence, leadership, and strength of that number.

The humble, sensitive, and diplomatic 2 symbolizes its resilient strength: It is easy to depress, and to squash, yet it is flexible, and, like a spring, the 2 rises again, much easier and quicker than does the 1.

The 3 represents self-expression, verbal art, enthusiasm, and inspiration. It is the most imaginative of all numbers, and this is reflected in its open and inviting shape, which is ready to embrace anything in this world and the world above.

The squares-shaped 4 is down-to-earth. It sits on the ground, and it is a foundation and a rock of support for other numbers. It represents limitations (often self-imposed) and discipline; it is never a dreamer.

The 5 is the most dynamic of all numbers, and the symbol seems to turn around its central point. The 5 will try anything at least once, and, and, true to its nature, is open front and back.

The number 6 is the most loving and sacrificing of all numbers, it is the mother/fatherhood numbers, and it seems pregnant with love.

The 7 is the thinker and the hermit. It is the seeker of truth, and it reminds me of a wise old man with an outstretched arm. In his hand he holds a lamp, shining its light in search of answers.

The 8 represents the balance between the spiritual and the material world, and the symbol reflects heaven and earth in the two circles stacked on top of each other.

The 9 completes the circle, Like the 6, it is a very loving number, but where the 6 sends its love to family, friends, and the community, the 9 gives its love to the worlds. It is the humanitarian.

As you apply the numbers to specific people and situation, their many nuance will be revealed to you. Soon you will recognize that numbers are not only illuminating, but also fun.

Below are some commonly asked questions about numerology

What is the effect of changing my name?

The effect of changing your name can be considerable, depending upon the other numbers in your chart. While the influence makes itself felt in a subtle way from the day you change your name, the change cannot be considered complete until the new name is fully integrated in your subconscious. Legally changing your name is not as important as how much you use the new name.

Can numerology predict health problems, financial difficulties, accidents, and other potential problems?

Numerology can both predict and not predict your future. Certain cycles definitely point to the possibility of painful experiences at certain times in your life, such as accidents, money problems, divorce, and the like. In the same way, numerology foretells many positive events.

However, at such times the person always has the opportunity to turn the course of events in his favor, or to let a beautiful opportunity slide by. Numerology can indicate, for example, that a certain period of your life will be highly rewarding, a kind of payment for years of efforts. Numerology can be very accurate in such predications. However, the rewards are comparable to the effort you have made. In the same way, numerology reveals the sowing and the harvesting cycle of life. If you have sown seeds of selfishness and greed, you will experience a time of loss-financial loss, or the loss of support from others.

What can my chart tell me about myself?

Your chart reveals your potential, your strengths, your weaknesses, your challenges, and your lessons to be learned.

Every number suggests potential strengths and weaknesses; all things have their light and dark sides. It is your freedom as an individual to draw from your highest potential.

A numerologist can have a good idea of which directions a person will likely move in, and how much of his potential he will use or abuse. This is known by considering the balance of chart, or spreading of energies, This is by far the biggest challenge for a numerologist, even after many years of experience, For example, a person with few or no 1's will have a difficult time establishing a strong identity; he will likely lack drive and willpower.

On the other hand, he may be a loving, giving, and very cooperative person. A person with an excessive number of 1's will have a strong identity, and enormous personal power, ambition and drive, but will be tempted to become domineering, selfish, aggressive, and perhaps, violent.

Both cases are examples of an imbalance within the chart of which the person must be conscious.

Can numerology pinpoint my death?

Numerology cannot predict your death. If you are being told otherwise, you should get away from that person.

What are the specific characteristics of numbers?

Numbers can be seen as archetypes. Each single digit represents qualities that all of us possess in greater or lesser quantities.

Each number, you might say, is the archetypal quality.

The number 1 possesses aggressiveness or dynamism, for example, versus the passiveness and cooperation of number 2.

In this sense, numerology has much in common with mythology. Just as each of the Greek gods possessed an absolute set of values, each number has a oneness of being.

To further illustrate, the number 1 embodies masculinity, a strong drive, individuality, and determination. The number 1 could never be confused with the number 2, which has the qualities of sensitivity, femininity, cooperation, and gentleness.

Each number is the counterpart, or the opposite, of the number next to it. The personality of the number 1 is the opposite of the2. In a different, but no less profound way, the 2 is the opposite of the 3, the 3 is the opposite of the 4, the 4 is the opposite of the 5, and so on.

What are the personalities of numbers?

The personality of each number is so clear and defined that once you get to know the numbers, you will be able to predict each number’s response to any given situation.

At the same time, each number does possess nuances within its field of characteristics that are enhanced or diminished due to its place in the chart.

Also, certain numbers complement other numbers; the right combinations will enhance and support each other. In this way, they may also limit one another’s effects. If placed in very prominent positions within the chart, such opposites can be very dynamics, but can also represent internal conflict.

Every human characteristic, quality, or idiosyncrasy is represented in one of the nine cardinal numbers.

Just as human DNA molecule is made up of four basic nucleic acids that are arranged in a complex, and unique spiraling ladder, so too, do the nine cardinal numbers represent nine archetypal human qualities that are also present in each of us. These nine archetypes are arranged uniquely in us all to form a specific personality with unique strengths and weaknesses.

Are certain numbers better than others?

All numbers have positive and negative aspects. They can only be considered better than others when they relate to certain demands in their environment, such as their vocational attributes, For example, 4s make excellent accountants, 5s make better salespeople and promoters, 6s make great teachers, and 8s are talented at business matters.

Sometimes we find ourselves attracted to certain numbers. Many people have a favorite number or numbers. Our attraction to a particular number is very much like our preference for certain colors. On the surface, these attractions seem arbitrary, but science has proven that colors influence our mood and behavior.

The reverse is also true.

Numbers correspond to our inner state and to our personal preferences in the same way. They, too, reveal much about our nature, and they even influence how we feel.

On a very deep level, each of us understands that a number represents more than just a quantity.

The numbers 1 through 9 represent archetypes, Each number has a certain character or personality: the creative 3, the dynamic 5, the responsible 6, the sage-like 7, and so on. Perhaps all of these characteristics are in you, but some are more pronounced than others, It is this link between the character of a particular number, and those same traits within you, that sparks an unconscious recognition or attraction.

Objectively speaking, there is no number that is better than another, so any preference for a certain number, or numbers, is purely subjective.
